| book description |

Paolo Favero presents a theoretical and historical introduction to visual culture for students in the social sciences. Featuring further reading lists in each chapter, boxed concise explanations of key terms and ideas, sample exercises for use by instructors and illustrations throughout, Favero guides students how to think about visual culture based on the history of visual culture as a research area and as a research methodology, using a unique transdisciplinary framework.Divided into two parts, part I presents historically and culturally situated critical reflections on key concepts in visual culture. Favero tracks the development of the field through from its classical roots in dualistic thinking through to concepts of multisensoriality, looking at the impact of technology on our concept of the visual and focusing on the camera and digital visuality. Favero refers to and explains thought from foundational thinkers in visual culture including Marshall McLuhan on vision and politics, Susan Sontag on seeing and feeling, Foucault on vision and surveillance, Baudrillard on representation, Derrida and Spivak on power in representation and Georg Lukacs on cinema and power. Part II illuminates uses a short chapter format to introduce core analytical models for unpacking the visual field. Favero guides students in how to analyse images and visual worlds, drawing on his own extensive work with photographic methods to help readers understand how to analyze what we see, and how to analyze visual objects.
