| book description |

Honouring the 100th anniversary of Paul Strand's birth, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. and Aperture have collaborated to produce this collection of Strand's work. Drawing from vintage prints in museum, archival, and private collections throughout the world, this book includes images which are published here for the first time. From the first work shown by Alfred Stieglitz at ""291"" in 1916, to his photographs of Colorado and New Mexico in the 1920's, to his powerful New England landscapes and portraits, and later work in France, Italy, and Africa, Paul Strand's work continues to influence artists and photographers around the world. Most of the photographs have been printed in a unique six-color process developed by master printer Richard Benson. Each image appears as a hand-printed, original photograph, and has great depth which cannot be achieved in the reproduction of photographs using conventional printing techniques. The accompanying essay by Sarah Greenough, author of a definitive work on Alfred Stieglitz, provides new insight into Strand's personal achievements and professional struggles. It recounts the profound impact his work continues to have on present-day art and photography.
