Vancouver and its Region is a broad-ranging account of one of the world's most spectacular and liveable metropolitan areas. It presents a historical geography of the city and its surrounding area, commentary on the contemporary city, and a report of the impacts of urban growth on the biophysical environment. A collaborative enterprise involving 19 members of the UBC geography department, the book traces the physical, social, economic, historical, and environmental development of a relatively small but highly important area of British Columbia and Canada. Vancouver's story has many facets. It is the home of a complex and vigorous Native society, whose culture was based on the exploitation of rich local resources well into the 19th century, but was disrupted and marginalized with astonishing rapidity by the impact of the fur trade, the gold rush, the railroad and the urbanization of its territory. During the latter part of this century Vancouver has developed into a dynamic international metropolis but has also had to deal with the accompanying social, ethnic, and political tensions. Opening with a photo essay which presents several original views of the metropolitan area, Vancouver and its Region is illustrated with many original maps, diagrams, and photographs which are filled with local detail yet point out issues and processes that are relevant far beyond Vancouver.
