| book description |
This is the story of the USA's first exploration into unknown places. Commissioned by their scientist-President Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out from Cape Dubois near St Louis, on 14 May 1804. They took over 40 men and headed west on the Missouri River in search of the fabled Northwest Passage through the mountains. It was the most important expedition in American history. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery, yet they would fail to find the primary object of their journey. Instead, their real discovery would be the land itself and the promises it held. They encountered animals, plants, landscapes, people and entire cultures which had never previously been seen by civilized men. This account draws upon the journals kept by Lewis and Clark and others in the Corps. There are reports of their encounters with Indians descriptions of the Western landscape introductions to two of the most fascinating figures in their party - the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, and Clark's slave York and details of personal experiences of hunger, numbing cold, loneliness and excitement.
