The final volume of the Norman and Charlotte Strouse Edition of the Writings of Thomas Carlyle, Latter-Day Pamphlets, situates the Victorian philosopher, social critic, and essayistâ€™s most contentious works within the social context of mid-nineteenth-century crises, including the revolutions of 1848, the Irish potato famine, and debates over slavery in the United States. Featuring the titular work of the Latter-Day Pamphlets, in addition to two versions of his infamous essay in support of slavery, â€œOccasional Discourse,â€ this volume will be published in two parts. Part 1 features the introductory materials as well as the full text of â€œLatter-Day Pamphlets.â€ Part 2 includes the two versions of â€œOccasional Discourse,â€ as well as the works cited, textual apparatus, and index. In keeping with the other volumes in the series, these pamphlets and essays are accompanied by a thorough historical introduction to the material, extensive notes providing historical and cultural context while expanding on references and allusions, and a textual apparatus that carefully details and explains the editorial decisions made in reconciling the editions of each text.
