| book description |

Voices from a disused quarry: celebrating 40 years of the Centre for Alternative Technology tells the story of the influential environmental organisation Centre for Alternative Technology through its buildings and the people who worked and lived in them. The Centre for Alternative Technology was created out of the ruins of a disused quarry in Mid-Wales in 1974. It went on to have national and international influence, first through its visitor centre, and later through publications, educational programmes and its Zero Carbon Britain project. Voices from a disused quarry is a full colour bi-lingual (Welsh/English) 48 page 40th anniversary souvenir booklet. It has been written by Allan Shepherd, author of many books both for CAT and for Harper Collins. It features extracts from interviews carried out as part of a two-year oral history project. The project explored the centre's 'equal pay, equal say' philosophy, the evolution of green ideas and technologies, gender equality, co-operative working and living, as well as exploring its place as an Anglo-Welsh organisation, working on an international stage. A larger book on the subject by the same author will appear later this year but this booklet provides a good introduction and includes a number of striking historic photographs found in the CAT archives.
