The Diocese of Meath in the Eighteenth Century

| book description |
Anthony Cogan's Diocese of Meath ancient and modern (see p. 26) is acknowledged as one of the great Irish diocesan histories. However, the scope of Cogan's work is so vast that he could not be expected to give an adequate account of a particular century. Dr Fagan's study, then, is the first to attempt a comprehensive account of the diocese of Meath in the 18th century. Meath is one of the most extensive of the Irish dioceses, comprising the whole of Meath, about five-sixths of Westmeath and about one-fourth of Offaly. This book chronicles its vicissitudes in this most interesting of centuries mainly through the lives of its bishops, from the flawed Luke Fagan early in the century to the truly outstanding Patrick Plunket towards the close. But it does not neglect the part played by the laity, both nationally and locally.
