Introduction to Education Cases

By (author) Rita Silverman, By (author) etc., By (author) William Welty, By (author) Sally Lyon

| book description |

A course-specific casebook, containing 15 cases chosen for their relevance to the course in question. Although all cases are available on the McGraw-Hill Primis database, by having the authors choose those cases that they feel are most relevant, instructors are freed from this task. Each case documents a particular classroom event or series of related events, and most end with a dilemma for teachers to resolve. Each case reflects the messiness of real classrooms: as a result there is seldom one right answer to a tricky classroom dilemma. A range of ideas can be suggested and critically evaluated and a plan of action developed with fallback positions available. Case discussions provide the opportunity to develop a consistent problem-solving method that can be applied later to various classroom situations and by using messy real-life cases that present dilemmas rather than neat solutions, readers are forced to think critically and develop alternative solutions. This edition contains an introductory essay on case-study teaching that includes advice about room arrangement, starting and ending the discussion, using the chalkboard, questioning/listening/responding and managing time. Detailed teaching notes for each case are also provided, including blocks of discussion, suggested question outlines, suggested board headings and suggested assignment questions. A student edition (ISBN: 0-07-057666-1) is also available, containing an introductory essay on how to read and prepare a case and how to participate in classroom discussion.
